What is Rivian car insurance company?
The electric car brand Rivian started Rivian Insurance Services, LLC to provide affordable car insurance policies to people who own Rivian vehicles.
Rivian sells two fully electric vehicles, a truck called the R1T and a sports utility vehicle (SUV) called the R1S.
Like luxury Tesla vehicles, some electric cars often receive higher than average car insurance quotes from traditional carriers.
So Rivian partnered with Nationwide and The Cincinnati Insurance Company to offer cheaper, informed policies that also include off-roading coverage as well as replacements for specific Rivian-branded parts.
The company now sells insurance policies in 48 states with plans to expand soon. But you must own at least one Rivian car to purchase Rivian insurance.
While your policy may be underwritten by Nationwide, The Cincinnati, or one of the many subsidiaries, you still go through the Rivian Insurance website to make policy changes, pay your bill, file a claim, and more.
The company also offers a Rivian mobile app and a connected vehicle platform and suite that monitors your driving behaviors to provide data-driven coverage, discounts, and more.
It also connects you to your Rivian Membership. The membership is free during the company’s launch, but a membership fee may apply in the future.
It includes off-roadside assistance as part of your vehicle’s warranty but not as part of your insurance policy.
The Rivian mission statement is to preserve the natural world forever. The company prioritizes sustainability alongside technology but with an adventurous spirit.
So overall, Rivian Insurance provides comprehensive coverage to Rivian drivers specifically designed to integrate seamlessly into the ownership experience.
What kind of coverage does Rivian offer?
Rivian offers almost all of the different types of car insurance coverages, including liability, comprehensive, and collision insurance.
You can also purchase uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage, medical payments (MedPay) coverage, and personal injury protection (PIP) insurance from Rivian.
But for information about optional policy add-ons available in your state, you must contact a Rivian insurance representative.

How do you request Rivian car insurance quotes?
To request Rivian car insurance quotes, you must visit the company website and order a Rivian vehicle.
A licensed Rivian insurance advisor is just a phone call away to help you through the process.
Otherwise, if you have already purchased a vehicle, you must contact your Rivian representative over the phone and ask for a quote.
The Rivian insurance advisors are available on weekdays between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. central time.
Unfortunately, if you do not own either the R1S or R1T, you cannot purchase a Rivian car insurance policy.
What are the average Rivian car insurance rates?
At this time, Rivian car insurance rates are not publicly available.
However, if you request a quote, you can compare it to the national average and the average cost of other similar cars.
Similar electric vehicles, notably Tesla models, typically cost around $225 per month or $2,700 annually on average to insure.
The national average for car insurance is $99.16 per month or $1,190 annually.
But keep in mind that there are many different factors that affect the price of car insurance, including your ZIP code, age, and driving history.
So to truly secure your best coverage, compare quotes online from different companies besides just Rivian Insurance and select the option that fits your budget without compromising your coverage levels.
How do you file a Rivian car insurance claim?
Many Rivian customers are only just starting to receive their Rivian trucks and SUVs. So, currently, not much is known about the Rivian car insurance claims process.
However, you can call Rivian during operational business hours to file a claim or access a claims center through the Rivian mobile suite.
Rivian Insurance only uses trained mechanics familiar with Rivian vehicles and parts for your vehicle repairs.
Plus, it promises to install the newest, most updated technology into your car when required.
Nationwide and The Cincinnati underwrite most Rivian insurance policies. Fortunately, both companies received primarily positive claims center reviews from real customers.
So hopefully, this means the Rivian insurance claims center is just as reliable and efficient as its subsidiaries.

What car insurance discounts does Rivian offer?
Currently, Rivian does not provide a comprehensive list of car insurance discounts available to drivers.
However, the website mentions a handful of stackable deals you may qualify for depending on where you live.
For example, in many states, a home and car insurance bundle is available, leading to a rate reduction of up to 20%.
You can also earn a 15% rate reduction using the Drive+ Highway Assist technology installed on every Rivian model.
When engaged, the hands-free driving assistance program automatically steers your vehicle, adjusts the speed, and even changes lanes at your command on select highways.
For details about what other discounts are available to you through Rivian Insurance, contact a Rivian Insurance Representative.
What are the Rivian Insurance ratings and reviews?
Looking at an insurance company’s financial ratings and customer reviews allows you to determine if the company is reliable before committing to an actual policy.
But Rivian Insurance Services, LLC is so new that the company is currently not rated by the leading credit rating agencies.
So instead, we’ll analyze ratings for Nationwide, one of the insurance partners working with Rivian.
Nationwide earned the following scores from the leading credit rating agencies:
- A.M. Best: A+
- Moody’s: A1
- Standard & Poor’s: A+
These high scores imply that the company is in a solid financial position and can reliably pay its claims.
The Nationwide customer experience also seems relatively positive. According to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), it has a complaint index of 2.23.
The median is always set to 1.00, and lower scores are better. So 2.23 means Nationwide receives slightly more complaints than the median, but not by a significant amount.
Ideally, the positive customer service associated with Nationwide will be matched by the Rivian insurance representatives.
Keep these ratings and reviews in mind while you comparison shop for your best coverage.
What vehicles does Rivian sell?
At this time, Rivian sells two vehicles: a fully electric SUV called the R1S and a truck called the R1T.
There are also three separate equipment packages, the Launch Edition, Adventure Package, and Explore Package.
Sustainable technology is the driving force of Rivian vehicles. So all interiors are made of animal-free products designed to be easily recycled at the end of the car’s life cycle.
The batteries in the SUVs and trucks are also designed to be easily removable and partially recyclable.
These electric vehicles also drive further on a single battery charge than any other car currently on the market.
The table below compares the different specifications for both the truck and SUV.
Rivian Vehicle Details by Model
Vehicle Details | R1T | R1S |
---|---|---|
Starting price | $67,500 | $70,000 |
Miles driven per battery charge | 314 miles | 316 miles |
Recommended wheel size | 21 inch | 21 inch |
Towing capacity | 11,000 lbs | 7,700 lbs |
Wading depth | 3 feet | 3 feet |
Variables like tire size do impact the range of these vehicles. The truck and SUV see a 10% to 15% decrease with 20-inch wheels and a 5% to 10% decrease in range with 22-inch wheels.
All Rivian vehicles are also equipped with the Driver+ Highway Assist hands-free driver assistance program.
It uses 11 cameras, five radars, and 12 ultrasonic sensors to provide you with a 360-degree view around your car.
It also controls your speed, brakes, and steering on select highways.
Rivian plans to release additional trucks that reach 250 and 400 miles on a single battery charge, plus an SUV that gets 250 miles on a charge, over the next few years.

What is the history of Rivian Insurance?
Rivian started in 2009 when CEO Robert Scaringe decided to do for trucks what Tesla did for luxury vehicles.
However, he kept the project purposefully out of the public eye for several years.
Before ever producing a single truck, he raised over $1.7 billion for the company.
Then, he secured significant additional investments from brands including Amazon and Ford Motor.
Finally, in 2017, the company acquired a retired Mitsubishi manufacturing plant in Normal, Illinois, and produced its first alpha prototypes.
In 2021, Rivian collaborated with industry leaders, Nationwide and The Cincinnati Insurance Company.
The partnership allowed Rivian to create specialized, affordable car insurance policies specifically for electric cars with off-roading capabilities.
This is a different approach to solving the issue of expensive electric car insurance rates than what the leading competitor, Tesla, is doing.
Tesla created an in-house insurance company with a slower roll-out. It’s currently only available in California and Texas.
However, by collaborating with already-established insurers like Nationwide, Rivian can provide policies to more drivers in more states before all customers even receive their trucks and SUVs.
Rivian Insurance Services, LLC now operates in 48 states, with plans to soon reach the final two states.
Does Rivian sell other insurance products?
Rivian Insurance also offers boat, home, camper, and other vehicle insurance policies, according to the company website.
Nationwide or The Cincinnati and the various subsidiaries also underwrite these other insurance types on behalf of Rivian Insurance.
Similarly, you can insure other vehicle makes and models besides Rivian trucks and SUVs on your Rivian insurance policy.
However, to qualify for coverage, you must insure at least one Rivian-branded car.
Availability varies based on what state you live in. So for more information about what insurance products are obtainable to you, contact a Rivian Insurance Representative.
