We know that this information isn’t the happiest information, but like some of the other information in this article that isn’t the most cheerful, we’re letting you know about it so these numbers can be lower in the future.

We can see that the total crashes Marion County in 2018 were 109. This number seems high, but let’s compare it with the counties that are connected to Marion County.
In 2018, Hamilton County (north) had 19 fatalities, Hancock County (east) had six fatalities, Shelby County (southeast) had 10, Johnson County (south) had 13, Morgan County (southwest) had eight, Hendricks County had 11 fatalities, and Boone County (northwest) had nine fatalities.
So, based on these counties, Marion County, indeed, has a much higher fatality rate than its surrounding counties.
Of these 109 crashes, 33 of them involved drunk driving, which is unfortunate because those fatalities are avoidable. Accidents that involved a single vehicle made up 62 of these fatalities and crashes that involved speeding, which is another tragic but avoidable cause of fatalities, resulted in 23 fatalities. There were also 53 fatalities due to roadway departure.
A roadway departure crash is a crash that occurs after a vehicle crosses an edge line or center line, or otherwise leaves the traveled way.
We’ve all seen gruesome intersection crashes, which should remind us to always use caution at these points of the road. In Marion County, there were 28 fatalities from intersection crashes. You should also be extra cautious when you’re driving with a passenger in the front seat, as 42 passenger seat occupants died in Marion County in 2018.
In addition to those who were in the car who died in accidents, there were also people who were killed that were outside of the vehicles. There were 27 pedestrian fatalities in Marion County, and there were four pedalcyclist fatalities. Though four seems like a low number, any number of fatalities is a high number.
You must also be aware of the dangerous roads in Marion County/Indianapolis. The deadliest highway in Indiana is I-70, and we’ve made a table to illustrate what the most dangerous types of roads are in Marion County/Indianapolis.
