The Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) released its annual list of the top 10 most frequently stolen vehicles in Canada yesterday. The IBC is an industry association representing 90 percent of Canada’s home, car and business insurers.
The biggest change is that the Honda Civic SiR has finally been dethroned from the top spot. This year there is a new hot target for thieves – the 2009 Toyota Venza.
Approximately 93,000 vehicles were stolen in Canada over the past year. That’s a significant 15 percent decline year over year.
According to Rick Dubin, Vice-President, Investigative Services, IBC, most stolen cars in Canada are resold in that country.
“We’re doing a good job of stopping stolen vehicles at the ports. Our data indicate that we are not seeing many of these vehicles there. We have to conclude that stolen vehicles are being re-sold locally,” said Durbin. “But because the stolen vehicles are in these local markets, buyers need to be careful.”
The top 10 most frequently stolen vehicles in Canada are:
- 2009 Toyota Venza 4-door
- 1999 Honda Civic SiR 2-door
- 2000 Honda Civic SiR 2-door
- 2006 Ford F350 Pickup Truck 4WD
- 2002 Cadillac Escalade EXT 4-door AWD
- 2006 Chevrolet TrailBlazer SS 4-door 4WD
- 2007 Ford F350 Pickup Truck 4WD
- 2001 Pontiac Aztek 4-door AWD
- 1998 Acura Integra 2-door
- 1999 Acura Integra 2-door
In all, the biggest shock to us is number 8. The horrifically ugly Pontiac Aztek is one of the most stolen cars in Canada?
We can only imagine Aztek owners are purposely leaving their doors unlocked and their keys in the ignition to make them so easy to steal that even a lowly Aztek can be an attractive target – pun intended.
But no matter how easy a target such a situation woud present for a thief, we’ve just gotta wonder…why wouldn’t they look to a harder, but nowhere near as ugly, car to pinch and avoid the embarrassment of being caught behind the wheel of an Aztek?
