It’s a pair of recalls today, with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) announcing that Volvos got an improper tire inflation label and a potentially dangerous defect on the Lotus Elise. Let’s start with the Lotus details, since it’s a much more serious recall.
The Lotus Elise from Group Lotus Plc, has a serious recall owners should address as soon as possible. Oil-cooler lines may detach, allowing oil to spray within the engine compartment or onto tires. If the lines detach, the risk of a crash due to loss of control is greatly increased. If oil sprays within the engine compartment, there is substantial risk of an engine fire.
A total of 5,037 Elise cars from the 2005 and 2006 model years fall under the recall in the United States. According to the NHTSA, multiple owners had reported the detached oil lines after seeing smoke appearing from the engine compartment, as well as their experiences with the issue. This sparked the initial investigation that led to the recall.
Owners should refer to NHTSA Campaign Number 11V510000 when they contact their dealer for service.
The problems Volvo is recalling for are much less serious, as they’re bringing cars back just to install a label. Seriously…just to install a label.
According to the NHTSA, Volvo C70s manufactured from November 15, 2005 through July 31 of the current year, and S60s manufactured from July 14, 2010 through April 16 of this year are the effected models. All of them were equipped with the now-optional spare tire.
The mislabeled C70 and S60 models have the wrong PSI listed regarding inflating the spare tire. Refer to NHTSA Campaign Number 11V508000 when contacting a dealer for the recall service.
