The general consensus is that Toyota is in an extended funk. Plagued by a number of significant recalls and months long sales declines, the last few years haven’t been business as usual for the automaker which has fallen from first to third in that same period.
But not all is bad for Toyota. The Camry has been the top selling car in the United States for twelve of the last thirteen years, a performance that is nothing short of amazing.
And the new Camry just received the highest possible score of five stars overall in crash testing by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). You may recall that the NHTSA has redesigned their testing to be more stringent and closer to a real-world experience.
And even though Toyota is indeed a Japanese company, the Camry, built right in my home state, 70 miles away at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky plant in Georgetown, is an American car. It has the highest portion of American-made parts of any car assembled in the United States, besting models from domestic automakers.
The newly redesigned Camry is an extremely important car for Toyota. And it also marks the first time the American-built Camry will be exported from the United State to Asia. 6,000 of them will be built in Kentucky and then shipped to Korea.
