Born in Detroit, Raised in California and re-born in Ontario

The title only tells part of this story, but it hints at the life this magnificent 1957 Ford Thunderbird has lived. The round trip itself is not all that unusual, as old car collectors from Northern climes scour the west coast for rust free examples of their project of choice. Not many survive with much in the way of original parts. This bird is one of the lucky ones.

Now owned by Deborah DiSantis, this Bird was on display at the 2011 Performance World show in Toronto. Despite being 54 years old, the car has managed to retain many key original parts. Most notably, the engine, carburetor and transmission are all original, having been rebuilt to bring them back to tip top shape. Beyond that, all of the mechanical parts have been replaced with new period pieces.

Even the dashboard, which rarely lasts this long without replacement, is original to the car, along with the horn ring. The rest of the interior is new and looks spectacular.

As Deborah says:

“With money, you can buy your dream. With more money, you can finish your dream.”

About Gary Grant

Gary Grant Gary knows cars. He attributes his love of all things automotive to his early life in the 1960s and 1970s. Gary’s father was a road racer in Ontario, Canada and thus, Gary went along for the ride. No, we don’t mean he was literally along for the ride during his father’s races. He just went to them all. We think the smell of hot Castrol R burned into his brain and left quite the impression. Gary spent the majority of his childhood turning wrenches on race karts and traveling to kart tracks all across Canada. He’s also followed in his father’s tire tracks, having built his own autocross cars, and competed professionally. In the 1980s and 1990s, Gary and his wife served as crew for a few teams in the Firehawk series, not to mention competing as a pair in their Swift GTi rally car. While he may not be competing professionally today, Gary is still on the ride. When he isn’t coaching his kids in kart races, he is traveling near and far to cover the world’s leading auto shows, special events and auctions for us here at
