Last year, in an attempt to get those who normally drive Japanese cars to consider domestics, General Motors offered car insurance as an included standard feature for any new car purchased by customers in the Pacific Northwest.

And now, Japanese automaker Honda is planning on offering free collision insurance to any driver who purchases the upcoming Fit EV in the hopes that the incentive will get more people to consider the plug-in automobile.

The Fit is one of our favorite sub-compact cars, offering stellar build quality, high fuel economy, loads of space to stow gear and of course, it offers a tremendous fun-to-drive quotient if purchased with the five-speed manual transmission.

The Fit EV is a different beast, however, since it’s a plug-in electric vehicle (EV) that never uses a single drop of gasoline. It appears Honda is treating it as a bit of an experiment, offering it only through leases, meaning it cannot be purchased outright, even after the lease ends.

Furthermore, the Fit EV is only going to be available for residents of California and Oregon, and only in the color pictured above, called “reflection blue pearl” this year. Honda says the lease program will expand to the east coast of the United States in 2013.

And Honda is only going to make 1,100 Fit EVs available over the next two years, so it’s a car that will contain just a slight bit of cache due to its somewhat exclusive nature.

The three-year $389 a month lease gets drivers not just a Fit EV, but their maintenance costs are covered and roadside assistance is provided the entire three years as well. And of course, there’s free collision coverage for the duration of the lease as well, and it comes with a $0 deductible.

However, lessees will be responsible for their own liability coverage, but since they’ll be saving hundreds by not having to purchase collision coverage, that shouldn’t be too hard to manage.
