Does North Carolina require vehicle inspections?
Yes, North Carolina requires that vehicles undergo inspections. All vehicles less than 35 years old must undergo a vehicle safety inspection. Vehicles registered in certain counties are also required to undergo On-Board Diagnostic Emissions Inspections (OBD). This test will determine if your vehicle is producing too much ozone-forming emissions. North Carolina has 48 counties that require OBD inspections. You can find a list of the counties on the DMV website. Safety inspections cost $13.60, while OBD tests are going to run you $30.
