What is a North Carolina permanent license plate?
North Carolina has a class of license plate that is called permanent. They come in two types: silver and yellow. Silver plates are issued to local government agencies, law enforcement, and religious organizations. Yellow are for vehicles in the state motor fleet. The plates cost $6 and never have to be registered again. There’s been a bit of a flap over the plates because a recent accounting of the plate showed 4,218 silver plates being used improperly by private colleges, businesses, and utility companies. The same accounting found that 2,623 yellow plates were completely unaccounted for.
