When was the Mississippi Department of Public Safety started?

The story of the creation of the Mississippi Department of Public Safety is involved tale. In brief, it was started through Senate Bill 161 on April 1, 1938. It created the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol, under the control of a Commissioner of Public Safety. The law created provisions for 53 highway patrolmen along with the commissioner, a chief of patrol, a driver license bureau director, chief record clerk, stenographer, and five assistants for the driver license bureau. These officers helped ease the burden that was being felt by the county sheriffs.
