We spend a lot of time talking about the dangers of drinking and driving. We maintain that if you’re drinking, you shouldn’t be driving. Likewise, DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) officers lecture school children on alcohol, narcotics and other drugs.
So shouldn’t a DARE officer know better than to drink and drive?
Officer John Newcomb, of the Seymour, Indiana police department was found sitting in his wrecked truck by concerned citizens after they had heard the crash of him sideswiping a legally parked car on the side of the road and then another crash when he collided into a tree. Beyond the fact that Newcomb is a police officer, he also was towing his department’s DARE trailer when he wrecked.
Newcomb’s official title is “School Resource Officer.” According to the Seymour Police Department website, “the School Resource Officer is not a position that is taken lightly by any officer charged with its responsibilities. Officer John Newcomb acts as a mentor, providing students with a role model as opposed to a silent over-watch. He also conducts lectures with the students on police related issues such as narcotics and alcohol and their effects on driving.”
We know to err is human, but we’re left just a bit speechless on this one. No word as to Newcomb’s job status, but we suspect he’ll be changing duties. And we think it’s certain that he’ll be paying more for his car insurance.
