Top 10 Most Expensive Cars to Insure

We recently took a look at the top 10 cheapest cars to insure.  That list was primarily populated with minivans and SUVs, which made us wonder: Are the most expensive cars to insure luxury and performance oriented models?

Using the comprehensive data of average nationwide insurance premium costs provided by MSN Money, we now take a look at the other side of the coin: The ten most expensive new cars to insure.

Focus on Performance and Luxury

As expected, the list is filled with performance-oriented cars.  8-cylinder and 12-cylinder engines make plenty of appearances, and German manufacturers dominate the top 10.

10. Mercedes G55 AMG: The first entry on the list isn’t a sports car, it’s an SUV.  Sold for more than 40 years in Europe as the Mercedes-Benz Galaendewagen, the G55 has an average nationwide insurance premium of $3,086.

9. Aston Martin DB9 Volante: Aston Martin refers to its DB9 as “a thoroughbred sports car with GT levels of comfort and refinement.” Can’t argue with that.  Expect an average nationwide insurance premium of $3,088.

8. Porsche 911 Carrera S: Porsche’s classic sports car has been in production since 1964, and continues to lead the way in technological advancement and performance in the generations since.  Expect an average insurance premium of $3,092.

7. Mercedes CL600: Mercedes’ CL class of cars sit alongside their S class as flagship editions.  With a V8 power-plant mated to a seven speed automatic transmission, the CL600 offers a compelling mix of luxury and performance.  The average nationwide premium on the CL600 is $3,114.

1. Mercedes SL65 AMG: Coming in as the most expensive to insure car is Mercedes’ flagship sports car.  A pavement scorching 604-hp combined with a stylish drop top may get you where you’re going fast, but that speed comes with higher premiums.  Average nationwide insurance premiums on the SL65 are $3,543.
