Top 10 Least Expensive Automobiles to Insure
While it may not be the first consideration to cross your mind when selecting a new car, insurance premiums can vary widely between makes and models and even autos in the same price range and class. Since the premiums you pay have an impact on your total cost of ownership, they should be contemplated in your decision process.
MSN Money recently began offering comprehensive data of the average nationwide insurance premiums on all 2011 makes and models currently sold in the U.S., and we’ve used it to compile this listing of the top least expensive cars to insure.
A Focus on Families
Soccer moms and families nationwide rejoice! Minivans and SUV/Crossover models dominate the cheapest to ensure list. Performance and luxury purists need not apply, as each of the models here have a family-oriented focus. Another added bonus is that you’re less likely to receive a speeding ticket when driving one of the cars on this list.
Japanese manufacturers scoring seven of the ten slots, and in all, only five automakers appear.
10. Toyota Highlander: With an average nationwide premium cost of $1,154, Toyota’s crossover comes in at number ten.

9. Ford Escape XLS: The first domestic entry on the list is Ford’s small SUV. Average nationwide premium cost of $1,150.

8. Toyota Sienna 6 cylinder: Three deep into the listings, and a second Toyota model appears. The Sienna 6 cylinder has an average nationwide premium cost of $1,143.

7. Honda Odyssey EX: The Odyssey has garnered major praise beyond low insurance costs. Average nationwide premium cost is $1,138.

6. Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport: The second domestic entry is the tried-and-true Jeep Wrangler. It clocks in with an average premium of $1,131.

5. Nissan Murano SL: The only Japanese manufacturer entry on the list not produced by Toyota or Honda is Nissan’s midsized crossover. Average premium is $1,128.

4. Honda Odyssey LX: The LX may be the lowest trim level offered by Honda, but this entry-level people mover offers a decent mix of equipment. Average nationwide premium is $1,115.
3. Toyota Sienna LE: Toyota’s LE package is similar to the LX package offered by Honda, but it is a step up from the entry level of the Sienna. This one has an average nationwide premium cost of $1,108.
2. Toyota Sienna 4 cylinder: With an MSRP of $24,560, the entry level Sienna also offers a low nationwide premium cost of $1,101.
1. Chrysler Town & Country LX: Domestic automakers didn’t overwhelm the top ten, but the cheapest to insure new vehicle is indeed a domestic from Chrysler. The Town & Country LX has an average annual premium of $1,092.
