Where can I get information about car insurance in my state?

The best place to obtain information on how your state administers car insurance is to go to a search engine and type in your state followed by the words- insurance department.

Each state has their own insurance department.  On those state insurance sites you can usually find anything you need to know about car (and all other types of) insurance. For example, most states include data on:

  • Any compulsory auto insurance laws
  • How to purchase car insurance
  • How to file a complaint
  • How the claims process works
  • Coverage and deductible information

Many  state websites also include rate comparisons between companies that write insurance in the state. They also may have a list of agents and companies allowed to write car insurance in the state.
