How do I get a CDL license in Maryland?

The first step to getting a CDL in Maryland is to get a CDL learner’s permit.  You must already have a driver’s license.  Additionally there are some age restrictions.  If you are between the ages of 18 and 21, you can only get an intrastate license.  If you are age 21 and older, you can get an interstate license.

The steps to getting your Maryland CDL learner’s permit are as follows:

  • Identification documents – proof of age, identity, and Maryland residency
  • Pass a vision and knowledge test
  • Provide  your valid Social Security number
  • A valid U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) physical card or a valid intrastate or interstate waiver

Per the U.S. Patriot Act of 2001, you will also need to undergo a criminal background check and the fingerprint process if you wish to have a HAZMAT endorsement.  Next, you’ll need to pass the skills test.  The skills test consists of 3 parts and you must pass a test to continue on to the next test.  The three components of the test are:

  • Pre-trip inspection
  • Basic maneuvers test
  • Public road test

For more specific information on the CDL requirements and process, you can reference the Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Manual and accompanying Maryland Commercial Driver License (CDL) Manual Amendment Insert (DL-151A).
