When To Consider Medical Expense Coverage

As with any type of insurance, auto insurance policies offer a wide variety of types of coverage. When you compare one car insurance quote with another, make sure that medical expense coverage is included in the quote. Medical expense coverage (also known as medical payments coverage) is an option that ensures payment of reasonable and necessary medical bills up to a certain amount if those bills are the result of a car accident. While it may not benefit everyone to pay for this additional coverage, in some instances it can be a lifesaver. So under what circumstances should you consider medical expense coverage?

This type of coverage covers anyone that is insured by the insurance policy–you, your family members, etc.–as well as anyone in the vehicle at the time of the accident. With medical payments coverage, medical bills arising from an accident or use of a motor vehicle are covered up to the amount specified by the policy, regardless of who is at fault. It also pays benefits even if you have medical insurance. Because of this, many people may think that medical expense coverage is just another unnecessary financial burden. However, this is not true, because the coverage can still protect you in situations that you may not have considered.

To determine if medical expense coverage is right for you, consider the following examples. If you are injured in an accident for which you are at fault and your medical insurance has an out-of-pocket deductible or co-pay that is cost prohibitive, medical expense would cover you. Likewise, if your health insurance does not cover certain medical costs (such as chiropractic treatment, for example), you would be burdened with paying for the total cost of treatment if you did not have this coverage. Additionally, if you often have other passengers in your vehicle, you should consider medical expense coverage because it will extend to them as well in case of an accident. As a final point, medical payments coverage is valuable because it "follows" you. In other words, if you are a passenger in another vehicle, and if that person does not have this coverage, your policy will apply if there is an accident. Even if the vehicle owner does have this coverage, yours will provide coverage above and beyond what may be covered by the owner's policy.

Medical expense coverage premiums are generally inexpensive, and can easily be included in a car insurance quote. Having it can prevent you from winding up in a financial bind should you ever be injured in an automobile accident. It is definitely worth considering, for your sake and for the sake of those riding with you.
