Theft Protection Systems And Car Insurance Rates

Car insurance can be a costly venture, no matter the vehicle insured or the driving history of the owner. Over time, car insurance payments can add up to a significant amount as payments are made every month over a year, ten years, or even twenty years. For that reason, many Americans are searching for ways to lower the cost of their car insurance bills, and insurance companies are willing to offer a number of discounts to drivers that meet certain criteria that they set forth, both helping to retain customers and lower costs. One option for drivers looking to limit the amount they pay per month is the installation of theft protection systems.

Theft protection systems, also known as car alarms, can take a number of different forms. The first is what is known as a passive alarm system. These systems are intended to prevent vehicle thefts by limiting the ability to criminals to access the car itself. For example, a passive car alarm could lock a steering wheel or send a signal to the alarm company that the vehicle was being stolen, allowing that to be communicated to the owner and police. Active alarm systems, on the other hand, are intended to make as much noise, light, and distraction as possible to call attention to the car and the individual stealing it. There are a myriad of both passive and active systems - and they can take any form from a simple loud sound to a remote slowing down of the vehicle by the alarm or car GPS provider.

The installation of one of these systems will often result in lower premiums being offered by an insurance company as they will hopefully lower the risk that the car will be stolen or damaged. This, in turn, lowers the possibility that an insurance claim will be filed and limits the amount that an insurance company will have to pay out. This lessened risk makes the owner of the vehicle easier and safer to insure, and can therefore result in lower insurance rates. While theft protection systems are important in both a car's defense and in lowering premiums, there is a finite limit to the amount that a premium will be reduced, no matter the amount of systems installed.

Theft protection systems can be a great way to not only protect a car, but potentially lower insurance premiums as well. Be sure to check with your provider to determine what type of systems they offer discounts for and how much those discounts will be. While the cost of an alarm or theft deterrence system can be high initially, it will often pay for itself over time in the value of premium dollars saved.
