How To Combine Car Insurance Coverage For Two Vehicles With One Driver

Car insurance can often pose a hefty financial burden, especially if multiple cars or drivers are insured. Combining multiple cars under one provider can be an excellent way to save money. The age of the car and driver, previous accident history, and other mitigating factors, all go into determining an auto insurance quote, as well as what is covered under the car insurance policy. A common issue regarding insurance is for car owners who own two vehicles. Often, these vehicles are insured either under two different policies or by two different companies, which can lead to overpayment for service.

If two cars operated by the same driver are covered under two insurance companies, the first step is to eliminate one of them. Call both providers and see what they can offer for multiple car insurance coverage. Any car insurance coverage worth its salt will offer a discount for insuring multiple vehicles. Do some research and find a deal which makes sense, even it if means leaving both companies altogether. When both cars are insured by the same company, the details of the policy can be hammered out.

Some companies will not cover two vehicles under the same policy number. This can be the case if one of the vehicles is a motorbike or large travel trailer, as these are often covered separately. There are companies that will not cover two similar vehicles under the same car insurance policy and will require the purchase of separate policies and policy numbers for each car. This should still result in an overall discount, however. Companies which do insure two cars under the same policy number will likely have requirements about the number or age of drivers, or the way in which the vehicles are used. For example, they may be unwilling to cover two cars under the same policy if both are listed as”primary” vehicles. If the driver says that one car is driven only occasionally, that may be a viable two-car policy option.

Regardless of how the details of the coverage are determined, having multiple items on a policy should result in a price reduction of each successive item. If this standard practice is not the case in your company, it is time to switch companies. As with any insurance transaction, make sure to request a copy of the new policy in writing as soon as it has been issued. Before leaving home, it is crucial to make sure that the vehicle being driven is actually insured. Driving an uninsured vehicle out of ignorance will not fly as an excuse.
