If you are moving to a new state and are planning to reside there, then you'll need a new driver's license and car registration. Of course, you'll also need to notify everyone, including your business contacts, of your new address and phone number. Your car insurance does not necessarily have to change unless you plan to stay longer than six months.

If the move is temporary or you are not going to be a permanent resident, you won’t need to do anything, except out of courtesy, let your car insurance agent know how to reach you. On the other hand, if the plan is to stay longer than six months, then get a new quote on car insurance rates for the new residency in your new state. You probably won’t need to switch car insurance companies as most companies do business in all 50 states. However, when you permanently move from one state to another, you only have six months to inform your insurance company of your move, since each state has different regulations and requirements concerning car insurance.

There are a few states that may not require liability insurance. Some state laws say you must carry "no fault" coverage, which means that despite who caused the accident, you both get to pay. What does matter is that you should be covered because each party's insurance covers the damage, regardless of who caused the accident or who is liable or at fault. Some states may require that everyone carries uninsured motorist and/or personal injury coverage.

Coverage limits vary widely from state to state, and your agent can likely answer any questions that you may have. States can require that you have extra coverage if you have a poor driving record. If you do not cooperate with state regulations, then you are violating their particular state law. It is very important that you protect yourself with the knowledge of what is required of you, and when. Ignorance may be bliss, but it is not an excuse.

Both auto insurance rates and registration rates are different in every state. Plan ahead when it comes to these factors, because you may not be able to afford to live where you are moving to. Your current insurance agent might be able to help you get an affordable quote in your new state just because you have been a good customer. If the premiums are higher in your new state, then you may be able to save money on the old policy, if you paid it in advance of six months. If you can, it is always best to find out how much your car insurance in your new state is going to be. If it is less expensive, then you could transfer your policy sooner and therefore save some money.
