Even in the 21st century, a lot of women feel the social disparity between themselves and their male counterparts.  In many industries, women in the United States still get paid less than their male counterparts for similar jobs, but there is one particular instance in which females receive a break and men don't – car insurance.  Car insurance is a little bit less pricey for the ladies than it is for the gents.

In general, a man and a woman who drive the same car with the same driving record at the same age will still have different rates, with the man ending up on the shorter end of the stick. This is legal gender discrimination for insurance companies to have in 43 states. Most insurance companies will charge a higher premium for a man because men are believed to be more aggressive drivers, who break more traffic laws and cause more accidents. Men like to drive bigger, older, or faster cars while women generally invest in safe vehicles.  Insurance companies hire psychologists and surveyors to monitor how different types of people drive and they have found that in general, men are more prone to be involved in accidents.

Chalk up that stereotype of women being bad drivers to some good old-fashioned sexism because the numbers don't lie. In the UK, men cause 88 percent of all road accidents and 82 percent of all traffic violations, according to a report published by the Home Office in 2002. According to TrafficSTATS, a risk analysis study conducted by Carnegie Mellon and AAA in 2007, men have a 77 percent higher likelihood of dying due to a traffic accident than women.  Also, adding to the higher premiums for men is the amount of mileage they drive, as with regular premiums. Men are more likely to drive longer distances, and more frequently than women are.

Age also factors into how much your car insurance will cost, especially if you're younger. The younger you are, the more high risk you are considered, especially if you're a young male.  Studies show that younger males tend to be much more aggressive (which equals more expensive to your car insurance company) and more likely to express their aggression directly than an older male or a female. This is not to say that because you're a male, your premium should be ridiculously higher than any female's rate. In fact, a lot of other factors combined with age and gender are factored into what kind of insurance plan you can get and for how much.
